Where Modern Meets Colonial

WHERE MODERN MEETS COLONIAL

Working with the architecture of your house can be a terrific starting point for creating a design that is distinctive and special.

When homeowners come to Uma Stewart Lifestyle & Design, they are looking to make their house feel like a home – a home is a space that truly belongs to you. The architecture of your house will reflect the time when it was built, but this doesn’t have to limit you from bringing your personal style to the space. In fact, working together with the architecture of your house can be a terrific starting point for creating a distinctive design that is especially for you.

Our Short Hills Classic project is a beautiful example of how we married the traditional colonial features of the house with the urban, modern style of the residents to create a unique ambiance.

Here the traditional wainscoting on the walls immediately infuses the space with a colonial aesthetic. We complemented that traditional feel with tufted benches while mixing in really modern light fixtures and decor that brought in defined, clean lines.

Visually full, this room reflects more of a classical lifestyle. We blended in streamlined pieces of furniture, and some linear pieces (like the mirrors and lamp) that bring a modern aesthetic. These clients had a love for Asian art and had collected many of their own pieces from travel and from gifts. We thought a lot about how to work their beloved art collection into the space.

In this photo, you can see the way the coffering in the ceilings along with more of the traditional wainscoting on the walls creates a colonial atmosphere. The clients were really happy that we were able to shake it up by adding a very modern, geometric carpet pattern. We brought it all together with a bright blue couch that presented a clean, contemporary look without being too modern.

Starting a design project can be scary, you’re leaving behind the environment that’s familiar and stepping into the unknown. Your home is important. Your home is where you take shelter, where you connect with loved ones, and where you rest… your home is where you live. Uma Stewart is here to help turn a stale home design into a place full of vibrancy where you feel self-expressed and satisfied. It’s important to us that your space feels as special as you are. A space tailored to your unique lifestyle, tastes, and aesthetics are always worth taking the leap!
