Where Functionality Meets Class

Where Functionality Meets Class

Carefully selecting each item we bring into the home is how we blend class with functionality.

When designing a space at Uma Stewart, we’re always looking at both the big picture and the details. We take inspiration from the client to create a place where their practical needs are met in an artful way. We take time to really get to know the client, their interests, their likes and dislikes, their passions, and their lifestyle.

We procure every piece that goes into the space we’re designing, which in the end creates a deep feeling of harmony and congruence in the home. The Stonebridge Montclair project is a great example of infusing a home with a sense of class while maintaining a functional approach. Every item has a purpose. Yet every piece was chosen tastefully, from the art to the vintage lighting fixtures, for both functionality and aesthetic.

As you can see, this bookshelf is strategically placed and beautifully decorated, using elements of color and shape to create a luxurious look. But there’s no point in having a bookshelf full of books that just look nice. We got to know our clients’ interests closely, and every book was stocked accordingly. They can sit down and pull out a book from the shelf that will be new for them, but that was curated to match their interests. Functional!

We created a large, hotel-lobby-inspired sitting area for these clients because they entertain regularly. The living room layout is extravagant and luxurious but it’s also purposeful and functional. We designed it this way to comfortably accommodate their large extended family who often gather there. We also chose casual surfaces that are cleanable to make the space family-friendly for children.

The bar we put in this house exudes elegance. But it was made with a very specific purpose: the client wanted to showcase her bourbon collection and have a place to sit and sip. Inspired by her passion for bourbon, we created a room with a classy bar and a sofa dedicated to displaying, pouring and sipping bourbon.

Functionality and class may seem like differing goals, but they come together in Uma Stewart designs quite easily. When you have a space that is curated to fit your interests, your lifestyle and your passions, every piece of it will be purposeful and functional. We find that class is naturally reflected in the spaces we design because everything we use is artfully curated as well as being intentionally selected for a purpose. It’s here that functionality meets class.
