Where Luxury Meets Kid-Friendly

The one surprising design key to creating a luxurious living room that supports the whole family

Designing your home with the whole family in mind doesn’t have to mean sacrificing aesthetics or even luxury (yes, even when you have small children). As a mother, I understand the challenges and the importance of setting up your house to meet the needs of your kids. And as parents, we need to have a space that feels like it’s made for us too!

Don’t despair, your home can be a place where kid-friendly meets the luxury you’re craving. Finding the balance in dichotomy is my specialty and you might be surprised by the one key feature that I love to add to every living room or family room for clients who are raising children and want a gorgeous space: a family activity table.

As you can see in this living room from our South Mountain New Build project, we’ve added a beautiful family activity table.

An activity table is a place where the family can gather to play games or puzzles, the kids can draw or do arts & crafts, or the parents can use it as a temporary desk to work and still keep an eye on the kids playing in the rest of the room.

This living room is a great example of a sophisticated design that suits the whole family. Mom wanted the lounger as a comfortable place to sit and read (back right of the photo). We created an elegant main seating area where they could spend time with guests. And we included the activity table in the corner so that when the kitchen table is still messy from breakfast and the kids are bouncing on to something else, there’s a space to engage them.

Giving the kids and the whole family this additional surface facilitates family connection and ease. In this blog, I share my 5 favorite tables for family or living rooms.

There were a couple of other elements we included in the South Mountain New Build project to create luxury meets kid-friendly.

This bench in the foyer looks beautiful and the way it’s built into the wall gives the space a refined look. But the bench also serves as a great place for getting the kids’ shoes on or off and keeping the family organized on your way in or out.

In their kitchen, we chose a table and chairs that are very comfortable (find them in the Style Guide here) and included art that would be enjoyable for the children.

Design is about more than creating a look, your home needs to meet the needs of your family. Luckily, you can have both. At Uma Stewart Design we love to create spaces where luxury meets kid-friendly. It’s important for your house to feel like a place where everyone belongs. Will you try adding an activity table to your living room or family room?
