Where Personal Meets Global

A Deeper Look at Our Westfield Victorian Design

Global design began appearing in the early 1900s as world travelers began decorating their homes with mementos from their adventures. The concept is that designers bring a region or culture to life through textiles, artwork, and details in a more eclectic fashion. Global styling must be executed very intentionally to be done right.

As we are always up for a diverse design challenge, we were thrilled when our clients wanted to bring a global style into their Westfield Victorian home. This 150-year-old house was extremely traditional and elegant. Maintaining the best qualities of this house was essential to the success of this project.

As we learned more about our client’s family and background, we established the type of decorative accents we were going to weave into the design of this classic-style home.  His family is from Rajasthan in northern India, known for their beautiful textiles, extravagant architecture, and bold colors.

We conceptualized a plan that would leverage his Indian heritage without compromising the traditional victorian style.

Here are my favorite pieces that brought this vision together:

I happened to be traveling to Rajasthan during this project and was able to source a blanket and pillows that were not only a perfect complement to the room but were culturally authentic. These textiles leveraged the global aesthetic and made his home feel very personal.

In addition to the textiles, I sourced a small collection of authentic Rajasthani artwork during my travels. These small paintings add a pop of color and serve as a beautiful accent to the classically built entryway.

Once home, I began searching for additional pieces that were inspired by Indian culture. I was thrilled when I found the perfect mirror to add depth and interest to this formal dining room. This mirror is representative of Indian architecture and is a very unique piece. It does not distract from the beauty of the traditional dining room but instead makes it feel more diverse and elevated.

Lighting is a beautiful way to subtlety introduce a global style. In the hallway, we used Indian-style chandeliers. These mirrored pieces tied together the entryway. The traditional entryway is accented by the artwork and uncommon lighting. Our clients loved the artistic feel of these lights.

While we highlighted the Indian-style accents of this home in our deeper look, there are so many more personal things we were able to leverage in this beautiful home. We incorporated his love of American history and her family’s Civil War roots through curated artwork and books. Furniture selections were made intentionally with their lifestyle in mind.

When it comes to interior design, you need someone who can understand your eclectic heritage and background.
